Projects

Climate Action Fund

In early 2021, EkeRua ReBicycle, USO Bike Ride and Greater Wellington were awarded a funding grant from Wellington Community Trust as part of their Climate Action Fund.

The project aims to improve access to safe working bikes for more people in the Wellington region. The overall goal to improve community resilience and reduce carbon emissions.

The project has 3 parts:

Regional bike hub facilitation – supporting existing bike hubs (libraries, workshops and other not-for-profits) where they need it. This may include bulk purchasing helmets, locks and parts, fundraising, grant applications, coordinating volunteers and redistributing resources across the region.

Te Pahi Pahikara (bike fix-up van) – a fully electric van, kitted out with all the tools and parts needed for a mobile workshop. This travels around the region supporting local mechanics to fix bikes and teach maintenance for those most in need.

Motuhenga Community Cycle Hub – this is led by USO Bike Ride. There has been strong interest over the years in creating a cycle hub in Eastern Porirua. To support this vision the project has supported the establishment of a bike library and workshop.

We’re very excited to be part of this important mahi over the next 3 years. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for the latest updates.

Wheel Change

In 2022-23 we are testing the value of providing e-bikes and e-scooters at low cost to people on low incomes. This pilot is being supported by the Wellington City Council Climate fund and the Waka Kotahi Hoe ki Angitu fund.

A limited number of bikes and scooters have been provided to people from Strathmore to Naenae, Wainuiomata to Waitangirua. We are collaborating with our partners at Free Ride, Motuhenga, Kokiri Marae and Raukawa Community Centre.

We look forward to sharing the results of this trail towards the end of 2023.

Bike mechanic training

Our mechanics Gareth and Aimee are keen to share their knowledge with others. With funding from the TG Macarthy Trust, Gareth has developed a course which we can offer to rangatahi and adults who are keen to learn. This can be tailored to your group size and needs. Costs may apply.
